I'm trying to bring my map into Illustrator from ArcMap and having problems replacing point symbols with the symbols I would like in Illustrator.  Point symbols are coming in as shapes or "Paths".

I don't have any problems bringing in the .ai from ArcMap using the normal procedures.  Hollow fills > save at 720 dpi > release clipping masks..... (points were saved at 0.5).

Screenshot showing path issue.  I can change the brush type but cannot replace with symbol.

Any help would be appreciated.

You'll want to make use of this script here: http://kelsocartogra...com/blog/?p=325 — it will replace all paths you select with something new that you draw (either a path or a symbol).

Just to call out the core issue here, your symbols in Arc have been converted to paths or polygons in the AI export so AI can't treat them as symbols.

You must have 'convert marker symbols to polygons' checked in the AI export dialogue. That's fine for preserving the look of the symbols in AI but won't let you treat them as symbols. Turning it off should create true symbols but beware they will default to some standard symbol or character since AI may not have access to the Esri font or symbol sets.

Thanks guys.  David you're absolutely right concerning having the ESRI symbols which are stored as fonts forcing my symbols from ArcMap to become characters/text symbols when I import from ArcMap to Illustrator.

A quick note on that, I did try turning on my ESRI symbols within

Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Fonts > selecting all ESRI fonts > Hide

But for some reason Illustrator still recognized the ESRI symbol fonts I had turned off even after restarting my computer for good measure.

The script Daniel posted works great.  Sort of an odd work around but it does convert the layers you would like as symbols to actual symbols which can be replaced using the standard replace symbol task which is exactly what I was shooting for.  Thanks for your help!
