Hi,

I'm very happy using mapublisher as my number one tool to make maps. Used a lot of the datasets of Natural Earth.

I was now looking for some premium datasets.

I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for it, be it, it is better (maybe more detailed than 1/10 million) than Natural Earth, is up-to-date (eg. provinces are up-to-date), has lots of data in it.

Searching the web for such a premium dataset that I can use in mapublisher is not quite simple. I end up with actually nothing.

Does someone know some providers that sell such world covering vector datasets? It should be mainly political: boundaries, adm1, adm2, rivers, lakes and so on. Or does it simply not exist?

Best regards,

Koen.

There's EuroGlobalMap (1:1M scale level, free) and EuroRegionalMap (1:250k scale level, not free), but I wouldn't necessarily call those premium. Apart from the fact they only cover Europe they're a bit of a mix/match of different national datasets. E.g. the Belgian government considers the admin-0 polygon to end at the coastline. Makes sense. The Dutch government thinks it actually goes out into the sea (12 nautical miles). The attribute structure is a bit awkward too, though there's ways to work around that.

Other than that, I don't know of any good datasets. There's a very big gap between OpenStreetMap on one end and Natural Earth Vector on the other end. As far as I know there's no global dataset that fits in between, and limited options for regional datasets.

Avenza (MAPublisher) sells data sets. I don't know what the scales are or what the detail or accuracy are like, but I imagine they would send you samples.

Hi Koen,

Try www.gadm.org/country

I haven't had much chance to use it myself but it's one data website I have kept in a favourites folder.

Worth a look to check to see if the scale is suitable for your needs.

Hi Chris,

thanks for your reply. I have already used gadm.org/country for a couple of maps, but unfortunately the adm1 and adm2 layers are not always accurate and up-to-date. It's not bad, but not what I'm looking for.

Thanks for your valuable insight though!

regards,

Koen.
