I am looking forward to your feedback. New ideas and suggestions for improvement are also welcome.

It looks like the news items are geocoded to city level whereever possible. That's (usually) good, but I would recommend updating some of the default locations for if there's no city listed with the news item. E.g. there's an article on Russia/Ukraine, but the marker ends up in the middle of Russia's bounding box, which happens to be in the middle of Siberia and quote far away from where the actual stuff is happening.
I would recommend making the capital the default position for an item if there's no city known, so in this case that'd be Moscow. I would also recommend making an option for an editor to override the default placement. E.g. in Libya there's 2 articles on Tripoli, plus 3 for "Libya", shown in the default position, but a closer look at the headlines shows they're actually about Tripoli as well.
Thank you for the valuable feedback. I am currently getting the geocoded information from different services and the problem that some news items are located in strange locations is a undesired result. I like your suggested solution to make the capital the default position if an item without known city. What I would need for that is a mapping from
country (iso 3166) -> capital geolocation
Any ideas where I can get that data? (ideally in csv)
