Do you know of any database for geographical data of European countries? In the Netherlands the data are available for free... But what about countries such as Germany, France etc ?

What type of data you are looking for ?

Did you run any google search for ?

Also, have a look at the eea repository > http://www.eea.europa.eu/

Be careful with any European Union datasets, they may not always include Switzerland

Depending on the scale level you're interested in, there's EuroGlobalMap (free), which goes down to about 1:1M scale, but it has a number of quirks. More detailed than that is EuroRegionalMap but that's a paid dataset.

OpenStreetMap may be an option too, again depending on the scale level and subject you're looking for. Recently I started using WeoGeo (http://weogeo.com) to download custom clips from the OSM dataset.

When it comes to topographic data, it really differs per country. The Dutch indeed have made a lot available in the public domain. In a similar fashion, you can get quite a lot of data from the Ordnance Survey.
