Hans
posting about visiting Stanfords next week had me wondering if I would
get to visit any cool map stores while in Italy. Anyone know of any
good map shops in Venice? In particular I'm looking for a good map(s)
that will cover the train ride from venice to Ljubjlana, Slovenia and
any interesting maps of the Italian Alps.

I
take you are in Europe now? I have noticed that you have posted at
European daytime (the board is usually not that active in the day -
with the exception of yours truly, Hans and Kartograph - and a few
more)

My
recollection is that European auto club maps are pretty good, and often
free when you show your AAA card. I believe the Italian auto club has a
good reputation when it comes to cartography.

I
picked up up the Italian Auto Club Venice sheet today in Boston it's
1:200,000 and should keep me informed about what I'm looking at out the
window at least until the Slovenian border.
I leave for Venice tomorrow afternoon.

Where'd you get an Italian Auto Club map in Boston?
I
always have to balance my love of detailed maps with a desire to travel
light. At least in Europe the auto club maps show the railways.

Unfortunately
the Globe Corner Bookstore still has not re-opened but I was able to
find one at the Harvard Coop. TCI is pretty prolific lots of titles and
some good european road atlases.
