I am new to CartoTalk and am excited to join your discussions. I am a GIS Technician at a city government and have been tasked with redesigning our dispatch map used by the street department. There will be two wall maps in the dispatch center (34x44):
- A general District / Subdistrict Map
- And one for Snow / Salt routes
Dispatch is still paper-based and works as follows:
Assigner reviews the wall map oriented by main roads; locates the target district, then sub-district group of city blocks; i.e. District 8; then 8A,B,C,D etc., then pull the right map book for more detail. There is a transparent plexiglass board in front of these maps used to mark off work completed / notes.
Do you have any examples that execute street dispatch well in a print media?
Current complaints are that the district maps are too busy / hard to read, route lines are too bold etc. Thank you.
I have attached examples of the current maps.
