New to forum.  Doing something that may be unique.  Looking to construct a map of the Eastern Seaboard of the USA that I can place on a web site.  Want to be able to scroll over a specific site , location, State or Port on the map and underlying data about that area will be exposed to viewers.

Have no idea how to start and or publish.   Did my first GIS online mapping system back in 1985 tracking fishery concerns for a project.  Want to take the East Coast online map to a very advanced stage.

Have you looked at ArcGIS Online? I assume you want something that is easy to set up with minimum of programming... ?

Even OSM with openlayers is a choice and best thing, it is open source and free. There is lot of material available online for training.

I would suggest CartoDB as the platform of choice. I find it more intuitive and aesthetic than ArcGIS online, plus its cooler.
