As documented in the above link, more Americans have died by gunfire in the United States in the past 6 months than have died in the entire 12 years of the war in Afghanistan.

That was my first thought. Raw counts are misleading. There are over 300 million people in the US. I think there are currently 74,000 US troops in Afghanistan. Not sure of the total over 12 years but I'm sure it's much much less than the US total pop. 

 

Not an argument against sensible gun regulation, just against politicized statistics ; )
