Job Summary: Provides a wide range of geographic information system (GIS) and computer graphic services to prepare geologic maps and illustrations for publication, display, and slide presentation for geologic research staff. Composes maps using ArcGIS software from author copy, departmental geodatabases, and shape files. Creates final products meeting established geologic and cartographic standards. Builds complex queries in ArcGIS SDE databases to create updated and new GIS layers. Creates computer graphics using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and other PC-based graphic software applications as needed.

REQUIRED: Associate’s degree in computer aided design, graphic arts, or related field and two years of experience in map production. 

Experience with ESRI ArcGIS and creating scientific graphics. Excellent file management skills in a Windows environment; ability to transfer ArcGIS maps to Adobe Illustrator and InDesign and make final cartographically correct maps; and demonstrated ability to process detailed work with a high degree of accuracy and thoroughness. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work well in a team environment. 

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree and a high degree of work experience in geologic cartography with working knowledge and understanding of geologic map symbology. High degree of experience using ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, and other PC-based graphics applications.
