This might seem like a really basic question, however, I haven´t found any way to perform this operation. Anyway, I have a polygon which represents the outline of a community and one shapefile containing several polygons on a county level. I just want the polygons which is represented in the community. If I choose "select from" the polygons won´t be cut according to the community outline. How do I perform such an operation?

Regards.

Joe

What software are you using? ArcGIS?

In ArcGIS you can use the Intersect tool to get just the portions of the polyogns that overlap. You can also use the Clip tool to use the community outline to clip away anything that is not inside the clip polygon.
