I am trying to obtain a table that lists landuse by county for a few states. For this, I am using Zonal Histogram. It has worked flawlessy for a few states but when I try some others, it crashes and says "Background processing has encountered a serious error and is unable to continue"

Zonal Histogram seems to ONLY work for certain files. I am attempting to do this for a few states and only certain states are working.

Let me note that all of the states feature class files are in a geodatabase with the same formatting. All of the rasters are in a separate geodatabase with the same formatting (GRID).

My question is why on Earth will Zonal Histogram only work for certain states (polygons)? Formats are the same. File Locations are the same.

What is wrong with this program?

I am running ArcGIS 10 SP5 on Windows 7.

Thanks for any help! Much appreciated!

It's possible that some of your polygons are not closed. You might try running the repair geometry tools on them to be sure. You could also turn off background processing which can sometimes cause tools to hang for no reason.

Other issue might be that the zonal process for some states uses more memory than others and is causing the tool to crash with no memory. Does it always fail on the same states? Are they larger states or with more zone polygons than others?

I've tried to turn off background processing and it just freezes, then crashes, and now that you mention it, they are larger states with many more counties.

Also, I have 8 GB of RAM so I doubt memory is the issue.

I'll try the repair geometry tools and get back to you. Thanks!

You'd be surprised how fast certain tasks in Arc can fill the virtual memory and the free space on your HD may be more important than the RAM in some cases. I think this particular tool does some fancy vector to raster then back to vector conversion in the back ground if your zonal input features are vectors. That can cripple a machine with limited free HD space and thousands of small polygons to convert. You can run the activity monitor while processing to check.

That said, it's probably more likely something else, or a combination of things.

Thanks.

Tried the repair geometry tool and still no go.I even successfully converted the feature to raster, then tried both with and without repair geometry. However, I noticed after I tried again, that I had accidentally set the raster/feature zone data to the landuse raster and the value raster to the county raster, and THAT worked but not sure why. The table produced was not helpful but just makes me wonder why it worked that way and not the other.

And I have 1 TB of space left on my HD so that shouldn't be the issue.

Also, at random times during my trials, I will get the R6025 Runtime Error-pure virtual function call for ArcMap.exe.
