I want to get the correct spelling for a legend.
"Townsite" (one word) or "Town site"
I think Townsite is correct and always used that, though I have been told that is wrong by an editor here.
Just curious what others think the correct spelling should be ?

Not a native English speaker, so take that in account... but I'd go for "Town site".

I believe in the US it would usually be "Townsite", one word.

"Townsite" (one word) or "Town site"
Dictionaries trump editors. It's townsite.

Fashions change in compound words, and the new coinage of yester-year may be common-place to-day. So you first check your house style exceptions file, then your publication's preferred style manual, which may in turn send you to a particular dictionary.
