We had one submittal in this category. Here is a link the the data and description of this Map Off.

Check out this entry illustrating the locations of the different fruit grown around the Maryhill estate.  The contestant was given a simple annotated aerial photo and look what they created.

What do you think of the design?

Don't know a thing about wine to be honest, so it took me a while to figure it out:

Sans-serif text = not grapes
Red serif text = red grapes (aren't they called "blue")
White serif text = white grapes

Love that! IMHO, if a map is obvious enough, it doesn't need a legend.

I think it is a very elegant solution to the visual categorization of the different elements in the map. One visual hierarchical difference is between grapes (pattern) and fruit (solid fill) then the labeling differences Hans to which Hans refers (btw Hans, blue grapes make wine popularly referred to as RED wine, though I suppose some varietals have a blueish colour).

The visually unique elements (bocce court, syrah) are dealt with nicely as well. It has a bit of a golf-course feel.

I wanted to play, and I was itching to make something... Chalk it up to my thinking the subject needed a softer approach. Enjoy! You may critique if you want, but keep in mind it only took a few hours and I know it's got a lot of flubs and smears.

(I wish I hadn't labeled the freeway. I wish I had looked up their typeface before doing the title. I wish I had done all the title text in pencil instead. Oh well.... Look, colors!)

And what nice colors! I greatly respect your initiative and your handiwork is very refreshing in this digitally over saturated forum (field).

I've spent more time as a fine artist in the last (many) years than as a cartographer, but I can still feel my eyelids starting to twitch just looking at some of the maps on here. There's something about a map feature that can't be tweaked after you put it down.

And that thing would be, regret...
