Our local URISA Chapter, in cooperation with the Arts Council in our area is working to put together a three part public event highlighting maps as art or maybe the art of maps. We expect to have an event at the local gallery where we will showcase the historical and current art and technology of map making. The second event will invite local artists to produce works of art showing the artist’s vision of maps and communication of place. The third will be an event with local schools dealing with maps and art.
I would like to put together some examples of great cartography (historical and modern), and some maps as art content to supplement the local efforts. We will probably also have a panel discussion on maps, their aesthetics, communication of information and how the public interacts with maps today.
If you have some thoughts on this issue (suggestions, examples, content to share, etc.) please let me know at ccurisa @ gmail.com

BTW love this site - I visit daily.
