Joing census data to TIGER files

I am attempting to join TIGER files of census tracts to tables downloaded from factfinder containing demographic data. I have done this in the past without too much trouble, but this time I can't get it to work right. Every time I try to join a table to the tract shapefile, the field I am trying to join on does not show up as an option.
Hopefully this makes sense. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or a similar problem when trying to join tables in ArcGIS 10. So far, I am completely baffled as to why this is occurring. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice with this.
Thanks!

The fields need to be of the same type (text or number). Double check the properties of the two fields that your are joining. If they don't match create a new matching field in one of your tables and populate with the join attributes form the original field. Let us know if that was it.
