This is a request I received today:
"Please let me know if you can provide a database with all populated nameplaces of the world (cities & villages) in the form:
Country - Region - Nameplace - Population - Coordinates(X,Y) - Elevation
Files from GNS , fallingrain.com or other derivatives of GNS are not acceptable. The database must be complete and reliable"
Is there such a database? I am clueless...

I certainly have no idea, my comment is simply that, if an honest freelancer doesn't sell them the true "best we've got", they may be seduced by a commercial "BEST AVAILABLE" package which basically repackages or uses the same information as free sources. Not sure if it works like that in Cartography particularly, but I've seen it in a lot of other areas (Zip Code products, Shareware products).

As far as I know, there's no such product. GNS is probabely the best available, but that already has some severe limitations. You could start with GNS and improve it, but that would take a lot of time. The people over at Geonames.org have started such a project, relying on user input.
