I always thought it interesting that two odd shaped states look alike.

It looks like I'm not the only person who has discovered this.

You're going to have to help us out-of-towners. Are these references to news events? Best I can make out is the Mikah whaling incident in Washington State. Rapa Nui (Easter Island) heads in (I think it's) Georgia? Star Trek "Live Long and Prosper" in Maine? Egg plant in Florida?

Some maps show things that are associated with a state, like a slot machine for Nevada or an orange for Florida or a car for Michigan. This time the artist looked at the shape of each state and selected something that the shape reminded him of. North and South Dakota are a matching set of speakers. Mississippi and Alabama have a kind of mirror-image symmetry, so the same thing was drawn in each, mirrored. There's no intended connection to Easter Island.

I used to keep a diary in a code I'd developed, and I'd draw an outline of a state instead of writing out the word. That's when I noticed that two widely-separated states are very similar to each other in outline.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the main idea was to draw just anything that the shape reminded him of. Drawings of items relevant to the states is the exception rather than the rule.
