This Fall I'm beginning a certificate program in GIS at American River College in Sacramento. I've been interested in cartography for as long as I can remember and, after experimenting with other fields, I've decided to pursue it as a career. My interests include GIS for natural resource studies, particularly water, historical cartography, and GIS for education.
I'm excited to be entering this field, and look forward to interesting discussions on this board.

I'm a student member of the California Geographic Society, and attended their meeting in my hometown of Davis this Spring. Does anybody have any recommendations for other societies in the fields of cartography/GIS?

Welcome, Andrew!
NACIS, the North American Cartographic Information Society, comes to mind. ;)
This year's annual meeting/conference is being held in Portland, OR in October. If you think you might want to attend there are student travel grants that can help defray some of the costs, as well as opportunities to participate through map design competitions and the poster session.

Good luck in your studies!
