Wow, Basecamp is amazing! I have been experimenting with project mgmt software/scripts since I started my new job in January. I would highly recommend WebCollab and dotProject (php/mysql) as OK solutions which will get the job done, but still they were too complicated and did not work easily in multi-user environments.
I just signed up for a Basecamp account and in 10 minutes I've almost transferred all of my projects. I know this sounds like a paid-for testimonial, but seriously, after dealing with all the frustrations of the other packages I tried, including Microsoft Project, this one is so smooth, fluid, and intuitive... just try it.

You should download and read their book:
Getting Real
It's an amazing read for anyone working on a collaborative project, and not just limited to software development.
