Hi
I have a point shapefile which indicates schools,buildings,trees etc now i want to give proper symbol for each to prepare a layout map but i don have right symbol in symbol selector which is allready inbuilt. can anyone suggest how to create our own new symbol and add to layer.

Assuming you work in Arc:
You can design symbols in a vector package (I know Illustrator can do this, maybe Inkscape as well) and save them as EMF or WMF files, then import them into Arc.

Besides the exisiting support for bmp and emf files 10.1 adds support for png, jpeg/jpg, and gif files for picture marker symbols.

It would be easier if we knew the GIS software you are using. Just in case if you are using QGIS you would need to create a SVG marker
