I am looking for a way to figure true trail distance taking in to account elevation gains and loss. That way I can have a 2d trail distance and a true trail distance hiked. Does anyone know how to go about this in ArcGIS 10.0. I have spatial analyst and 3d analyst.

Hello KAG,
Not sure about the ESRI product offerings but this is very easy to do in GlobalMapper.
If you have GM, you must have one terrain model loaded and a vector line representing the trail. Using the Digitizer Tool select the line right click select Path Profile then when the dialog box opens select Options and Show Path Details. Let me know if this helps.
