Three months ago we added several fonts (Frutiger and others) to Mac OS 10.6.8 in HD -- Library -- Fonts.
That worked fine, until recently.

Last week we installed Adobe update 5.5
+ we installed a HP printer update that was suggested to us by Apple Software Update.
+ we installed a Windows font ESRI ArcGIS TDN.TTF = TrueType.

* Today we removed that ESRI ArcGIS TDN.TTF
* We cleared all caches (with Titanium OnyX).
We did NOT yet "Repair Permissions" (because we are afraid to corrupt our Licence Files for Avenza).

Apple software (TextEdit and Mail) can still use all fonts,
but other software (Illustrator, Word 2008, FreeHand, FileMakerPro7) do not see "my" fonts (Frutiger).

What else can we try? Thanks!

Fonts can be in two places:
Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts (accessible to all users)
and in ~/Library/Fonts (i.e. in your user profile)

Perhaps some software only looks in one of these places?

Try using Font Book (in your applications folder) to check and see if the font is installed properly and not corrupted. Font Book is great for seeing all of your fonts that are installed, finding duplicates, turning fonts off and on and you can even group them. I have a cartography group of fonts.

Also repairing permissions will not harm your Avenza Licenses. In fact it is something you can do monthly or you should do whenever you update your OS software.

Thank you for the support and ideas. I asked DiskUtility to repair all Permissions. OK, no harm but it was not the solution for my font-problem.
Then I did "Get Info" for the Macintosh HD and asked there to repair all Persions for all folder. Probably that was a big mistake ;-(

Now after re-installing the System and thanks to Time Machine I'am back in business.
And from now on I will use proper Font Management software.
