Good day everyone,

This is my first actual post;

Some background:
It's an aeronautical chart which is supposed to depict obstacles in the take off flight paths for airports, this first picture is just a section, but I need help on the color scheme. The aeronautical chart manual on which this chart is based was created way before digital era and even thinking of using colors, so it is all black and white however nowdays we usually add color.

To begin with I use ESRI products but for this particular case I am using Inkscape as it only needs to be retouched and have a close deadline, plus I would like to learn to make some maps like I have seen here.

Anyway,

I need some help on deciding the colors for
1. City Blocks - fill & Stroke
2. River - Fill & stroke
3. Topographic Curves - I would like to mantain the used colors but open to suggestions

Keep in mind this is not the final product, but I am open to suggestions as I want to improve my skills

What media will the final map be, and what size (if paper)?

The map normally has to be both printed and digital PDF file, the size is ANSI D I will attach a complete view once I fix it (Inkscape ruined the SVG file! oh well )

This would be the Layout, I just started working on it so I am in the process of separating by layers to do the cartographic work,

I think this would be better to get a right assessment on your opinions!

My assumption is that the streets and blocks are fairly unimportant background information, and that you want the obstacles to stand out. So I'd have white streets in a tan or light gray-green ground, a desaturate blue water, and use dark saturated colors for the obstacles. No strokes or boundary edges anywhere, except possibly the water.

Thanks for your advice, I will need to investigate on the desaturate option you gave I am new to using Inkscape to edit files. Here is the complete layout so you get the idea better.
