Creating a terrain map in ArcMap from autocad contours with the Z value as text

Im new to ArcGIS and I have been given survey data in .dwg that I need to create a terrain map out of for flood plain mapping.
The lines in the .dwg have their Z values as text, so I need to link this to each line in Arc somehow?
From searching on google this seems to be a common problem but I cant find a tutorial for it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? or tell me how to do it??
I have Arc Info with the spatial analysis and 3d analyst extensions.
The file is too big to attach but can send.

Have you looked at the "join" tool yet? Does the Z value text table have any other fields, like an ID field? What you are looking for is a matching attribute between the Z value table and the line work table. These may not be called the same thing but will have the same value for each feature (each line). Run the join tool and use the matching field from each table to bring the Z value attributes over to the line work.

-Open the attribute table for the polyline portion of the dwg and select all polylines for which there is a valid Z-value (often times, borders or other polyline features will have 0 or null values that can compromise the later surface creation).
-Export the selected features to shapefile
Using the new shapefile, convert shapefile to TIN (using 3D analyst tools if you have them), using your Z-values to populate the height field
-Convert the new TIN to a Arc GRID using 3D Analyst - Conversion - From TIN - TIN to Raster. Make sure that the data type (integer or float) is appropriate for your data, and change the Observations option to Cellsize and select your desired output resolution.

Hi David,
Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately there is no common filed to join from, is there a tool for assigning the closest object to another object?
Another problem I noticed is that the poly lines are all broken where the text intercepts them, is there an Arc Cure for that? ie, completing the lines?

ET Geowizards has a tool that automatically fills contour gaps.

Looks good, thanks! Does it have a tool for assigning annotation to the nearest or intersecting polyline?
