I'm looking for any GIS data on ancient roman roads and geography. Data similar to the image below ideally. I've made a few cursory searches but nothing pops up other than pay data form euratlas. I'll digitize if needed but I can image there must be a few layers already out there somewhere.

If you need it at that scale it shouldn't take much time to trace a line shapefile.

I know I'm just being lazy. Although I will need it a slightly better scale as well (the maps are nested, from full Mediterranean to regional).

There's some info on Wikipedia about Roman Roads in Italy, but very little in other countries/regions in the Roman Empire.

For me, the example map is too coarse. I'm happy to share any info I have to date with you. Perhaps between the two of us we can create something decent for others to use.

That would be great Craig. I'll let you know if I find (or make) any better data. The roads are the basis for biblical route illustrations in a small book and may be ok (not great) for my purposes.

Some of the maps of the Roman Empire in the Historical Atlas by William Shepherd show roads. Take a look at "Reference Map of the European Provinces of the Roman Empire", for example. I've digitized from some of these historical maps before -- they're a great public domain resource.

The maps in this Historical Atlas are breathtaking. Drawn with crow quill pen, hand lettered. Truly a labour of love!
