Am I dreaming or was there a way to interactively move the pattern inside of an object by grabbing it without mooving the object itself? Maybe this was a Freehand thing??

I have never played with these things myself, but it isn't this what Rick Johnson's Nudge Palette is for?

I vaguely remember what you describe though, but I might be dreaming...

You can move and scale pattern fills by holding down the ` key (the one at the top left corner of most keyboards).
