There have been at least a couple maps (one of which I believe was done by our own Nat Case) that show the US interstate highway system in a simplified manner, with the intention of emphasizing the parity between the highway number and its location on the grid. To my knowledge, the link below shows the first attempt at visualizing the older (and more extensive and complicated) US highway system in a similar manner:

I really like your map, Dale. Very polished and well-designed.
As a first step, do you start with georeferenced data and snap to a grid or is it all done by hand? I've tried to semi-automate schematic maps like this, and I've never gotten very far...

Has anyone ever seen that 'simplified map of the US highway system' jpeg thats floating around the web? It's awesome. Can't find it anywhere now.
