I have been working on this map using a feathered-border effect and wanted to post it to the forum. The boundary effect is produced in Photoshop with cities of similar size (area) grouped on the same layer and getting a slightly different amount of the effect.

Very good map, lovely to look at. I'd simplify the style of those dashed lines (UGB and counties) and make the road hierarchy more apparent (by varying the percent as well as width). Oh, and I believe Maywood Park is a separate jurisdiction. Thanks for showing us some good, classic cartographic design.

Nice map Matthew. I actually like the subdued roads as they are and might only add thickness to the major roads and highways without darkening them. The Hwy. symbols stand out a lot though and seem over emphasized given the desaturated road style. Maybe they can be lightened or made greyscale. I agree with Lawrence on the co. and UGB lines, they seem a little busy. But maybe its the size of the image? Is this a wall map? Printed full size they would probably be just fine.

Given the map's purpose, I think the roads are fine. I wouldn't bother adjusting the thickness or the hue/saturation. I do, however, agree that the UGB and county lines could benefit from some additional attention. I like the dashed lines, but I think it is a little difficult to differentiate between the two. Are the two boundaries as important as the other jurisdictional boundaries?

Again, stylistically, I really like the feathered boundaries. Nice map.
