Hi,

I have several hundred groups of data points (in lat/lng format). I want to generate heat maps for each group using kriging and then display the generated raster data on a server. What will be the best way. I can't use ESRI products as they're not free.

Thanks!

With Free - Open Source solution, i would use GRASS + R to kriging (http://grass.osgeo.org/wiki/Kriging) , certainly the result should be raster. Then i would use QGIS + MapServer (http://hub.qgis.org/...Server_Tutorial) to publish by using QGIS Server. That's the quick and dirty way for person who does not have much knowledge on programming.

This shows how to do it using Google Maps and Tixik heatmaps.

Once you get your raster data processed, i would look at tilemill to display it, it's a free web-mapping tool that can display loads of raster data and provide interactivity if you want. Here's a recent project by the developmentseed/mapbox/tilemill team that might be up worth looking at. Tilemill can clso display google charts and data from google docs/fusion tables as well.
