Have you attended a conference lately that had a really good map gallery contest?
I will be organizing a map gallery/map design contest at an upcoming GIS user group conference.
The only example I have to go on is ESRI's user conference map gallery.
If you have any ideas, tips, or comments regarding your map gallery experiences, please let me know!
Thanks!

I thought the poster session at NACIS this year was absolutely amazing. Lots of high-quality maps there.
Quality is the thing you want to go for, followed by quantity. One of the things I appreciate most in a map gallery is a chance to talk to the cartographers and find out about the design process, but I understand this isn't always possible at a conference.

In lieu of that, maybe ask the exhibitors to offer a few words about how the map was produced. At a minimum you might ask them to tell you the software used, general workflow, biggest data challenge, biggest design challenge, detail they're proudest of, and what they might like to try doing differently next time. Try a format where they offer 15-word short answers, not long explanations full of buzzwords.

I like Dennis's idea - particularly about identifying and describing the problems/difficulties encountered during the map-making process. You could standardize their input/feedback via a form - this would help maintain consistency in feedback.
Good luck.
