A few months ago I was asked to give a short (90 min) lecture on cartography to the GIS fundamentals class at Stanford University. I put together a slide presentation focusing on some vary basic design concepts stressing maps as visual communication devices and the importance of design to effective communication. I borrowed heavily from Krygier and Wood's "Making Maps" as well Brewer's "Designing Better Maps". I think it all falls under fair use and I plugged their books at the end, so I hope they won't mind my sharing the slides here! (link below)

I missed a few of my talking points and still had to shorten it up at the end. Not sure how effective this presentation was, even at an hour an half it's very hard to get both practical techniques and basic design theory across, and with only a week to go before turning in their projects I doubt many students will have time to make much use of the advice.

Any way here it is for you consumption... this is a fairly superficial treatment of cartographic design so keep that in mind when beating me up for leaving off your favorite mapping pet peeve ; )
