Ecotrust Canada is an enterprising non-profit whose purpose is to build the conservation economy. A conservation economy provides meaningful work and good livelihoods, supports vibrant communities and the recognition of Aboriginal rights and title, and conserves and restores the environment. In the conservation economy, returns are about more than the numbers at the bottom of a balance sheet. We gauge business success in terms of the planet, people, and profits—the triple-bottom line. At Ecotrust Canada, we believe that a capital gain need not be nature’s loss.
Working at the intersection of conservation and community economic development, Ecotrust promotes innovation and provides services for communities, First Nations and enterprises to green and grow their local economies. In all of our work, we aim to build the capacity of communities, institutions and businesses and connect conservation entrepreneurs to each other, and to the marketplace. Ecotrust Canada has over 10 years of experience working directly with First Nations communities to assist in various projects, including traditional knowledge mapping, capacity building and land use planning. We have provided support to communities by way of building tools for improving decision-making and information democracy.
