We invite applications for a PhD level graduate research assistantship in the Department of Geosciences, Oregon State University beginning between spring and fall 2012. The selected student is expected to collaborate on one of the research projects of the Cartography and Geovisualization Group combining computer graphics, geovisualization and cartography. Topics of interest are scale-adaptive web mapping, pseudo-realistic maps, automatic flow maps, georectification, multivariate representation of statistical surfaces, terrain visualization and generalization in 2D and 3D, and applications of new hardware, such as autostereoscopic displays, portable devices or motion sensing devices.
We offer this position in a growing team with excellent possibilities for research in a stimulating environment with international collaboration. Salary and benefits are according to OSU standards (0.49 FTE) and tuition fees are covered.
We expect a master’s degree in geoinformatics, computer science, cartography, geographic information science or a related field. Preference is given to candidates with proven capabilities in software engineering and computer graphics. Proficiency with Geographical Information Systems is required. Candidates are expected to contribute to teaching, must be fluent in English and have good writing skills. We expect the commitment to publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
