Hi all,

I'm looking for some tips on good global level base data for features like coast lines, lakes, rivers, roads, populated places, misc geographic features, etc. What I'm after is something like the Natural Earth collection of data but for the next scale down, say something that might work well at 1:1million.

As it is I push the Natural Earth 10m data well beyond its intended scale, and for the most part it works well but I'm finding the route maps I do for OJ are more frequently at a slightly more local scale than appropriate for that data and it's often difficult to pull good data together to fill in the gaps or get better detail. I typically manage to find what I need online but it takes a while to locate and the data comes form a variety of sources. One I often use is the DIVA-GIS data and it helps but could be better.

What other resources do you guys use in addition to NE to fill at the larger scales?

A Natural Earth-caliber version of VMAP0 (1:1,000,000) would be awesome in terms of both usefulness and amount of effort required to produce. Too bad VMAP1 (1:250,000) is mostly unavailable.

There doesn't seem to be much else out there. Perhaps vector exports of OSM?

It would, not sure how I missed that... I usually check other posts for just that mistake!
