Hello.

I'm studying spatial diffusion of Poliomyelitis.

Can anyone point me to (free to use) :

1) Shapefiles for waterways/ roads / rail for North east USA 1916?

2) Temperature data by county for the counties shown (I have a list)
preferably weekly for July to November 1916. NOAA has data but it's not easy to assign to each county.

Also (for a different data set)

3) 1910- 1971 monthly temperature for each US state (US wide) and series of infrastructure and waterways shapefiles.

There's NHD (National Hydrography dataset) data, but I think that is all contemporary. Some of wouldn't have changed too much though. State websites might have some historical data. Check for local archives (county, city) as they might have historical maps that you can download rectify and digitize...

Thanks for that, David. Yes, NHGIS is fantastic. I'll check out NHD.
For future searchers I just found this site http://www.diva-gis.org/gData where it's possible to download what look likke good shapefiles for almost any coutnry. Really great.

What I really need though are railroads and roads for 1916 (Not held at NHGIS) . Census has data for some aspects but its a lot of data to navigate and download....http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tgrshp2010/tgrshp2010.html
