I've got a shape file containing building footprints. The footprints are derived from CAD, so there is a lot of detail to them.
However, I'm looking to make a map of the area and want to simplify the building shapes so that they're stylistically smoother. What's my best option? Can I do this with Representations in Arc 10?
Simplifying geometry?

Hi Vestry,
If you've got a lot, take a look at:
http://www.axes-syst...-generalization
and:
http://www.axes-syst...tographic-model
This is available on demand over the web:

You can setup a PostGIS database, import your datat to PostGIS and use this function:
http://www.bostongis...implify.snippet
Also, if you use QGIS, there is Simlifying function under Vector Tools. But if your dataset is large, I suggest using a geodatabase (PostGIS)

The Simplify Building tool seems to do the trick. Can I selectively apply the tool to certain features within a feature class? Or is it a blanket application?

If you have a set of features selected the tool will only do those selected features.
Tried it just now and what I was given to understand does work. That is, if you have some features seelected in the layer you are running the tool on it will only do the selected features.
