Good morning all!

I am working on totaling up all road miles in a given county, municipality, or Congressional District within a State. I can select all of the roads by feature, but I have not found a good way to total up their linear distance. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Open the attribute table, right click on the length field, and choose Summarize.

If you are doing any editing, make sure they are in a GDB and the length field will automagically update.

Unfortunately the Attribute Table provided by the Census Board contains only these fields:

FID, Shape, StateFP, CountyFP, LinearID, FullName, RTTYP, MTFCC

So there is no field that details the lengths of the selected roads.

Add a new field, then right-click and select 'Calculate Geometry' and choose Length. Then perform the summary.

If you are using "calculate geometry" and you want to just calculate length for one state, make sure the road features break at the state line. If they do not then first you will have to clip the roads to the state (select the state boundary and use Clip tool), then do the calculate geometry procedure. Otherwise you'll be including the road length that is outside the state as well.
