We invite you to please take a moment to renew your membership online - it only takes a few moments, and the costs, as always, are very reasonable.
We are doing more than ever before with every dollar you contribute in membership dues. Here are a few of the highlights:
NACIS has taken over the administration and financial responsibilities of cartotalk.com, the premier cartographic, GIS, and design discussion forum. NACIS members are engaging in new ways on cartotalk, a team of Content Stewards has been created to lead and curate content within sections of the forum to make the forum even more useful. Take a moment to stop by and join the conversation today!
In 2009, we conducted an experiment of producing an issue of Cartographic Perspectives (CP64) for digital distribution. Based upon its success, two more digital issues (CP66 and the soon-to-be-released CP67) were created and distributed as downloadable, full-color PDF files. We also formed a great team to map the next steps for our journal.
Awards and Grants
Your commitment to NACIS has allowed for additional participation in the annual meeting, which enriches the overall content of the conference. $5,000 was distributed through the annual NACIS travel grants and awards program to students and NACIS members. Additionally, NACIS was able to award $1,500 to students for excellent work in cartography and design, in both digital and print media.
Sustaining these initiatives is core to NACIS objectives and ensures the vitality of our Society, allowing it to promote cartography and design more broadly. In the next year your membership will support ongoing initiatives that will continue to foster strong connections to related fields, and will help our Society develop in new and creative ways.
NACIS seeks to improve access to both scholarly research and practical knowledge. The experiment of distributing CP digitally inspired the Society to explore offering selected CP content through an Open Journal System (OJS). After careful review of development options, NACIS has contracted with Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University, who is a pioneer of OJS. Over the next few years, CP will reach a much broader audience, by becoming part of the Public Knowledge Project. We are excited about putting CP ahead of the curve for academic journals. This transition is already underway, and we look forward to your support and feedback.
Additional Member Benefits
We are exploring opportunities for NACIS members to receive useful discounts on goods and services as an added benefit to membership. Keep your eyes open for these!
While nacis.org has served our Society well, we are working to enhance the NACIS web presence for you. Our new website will better reflect the design talents of our membership. Through new dynamic functionality the website will provide a place to foster camaraderie and continue conversations beyond our annual meeting.
These are all necessary and important projects to keep NACIS relevant and running efficiently, and we rely on the support of our members to keep them going. Please join us this year by signing on as a member at www.nacis.org and to Join NACIS/Renew Membership.
