I found this while looking for my next cartographic thrill:

Doobybrain site
Here & There Horizonless Map Site

Anyone brave enough to give it a bash  - it looks amazing. It's a pity the shop is currently shut on the site because £40/€45/$65 for the set seems like a bargain to me!

Some videos of the projection in action:

GPS video
Distortion video

Google should take some cues here and figure out a way to make Google Maps display in this sort of fashion.

I think it would be interesting to see Google Earth projected on the inside of a globe as opposed to the outside ... anyone tried anything like this before?

I had seen that a while ago and lost the reference. It is very cool.
Thanks for posting it Pete.

Over 100 years ago? Dammit, there really is nothing new under the sun, is there  ?!

I think you've provided me with my lunchtime reading material for the next month or so ... some of those links are absolutely fascinating ... and quite bonkers!

I should have remembered this - I saw it in an episode of QI a while ago  !

Wyld's Great Globe

Mapparium

Beware the man that gleans his knowledge from quiz shows and bolsters it with references to Wikipedia  !

Wyld's globe must have been one hell of a sight when it was unveiled and if I ever get to Boston the Mapparium is going to the top of the itinerary!
