Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me this.

I'm looking for a point file for all towns/cities in Alberta, Canada. It has to be free and easy to download (Shapefiles preferably).

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Check out the Canvec (50k) dataset distributed through Geogratis.ca

It covers the entire country and can be downloaded in Geodatabase/shape/CAD format (entire provinces merged!).

In Alberta, Altalis.com (at 20k) distributes publicly, but at a fee.

I would also suggest contacting the Alberta Geo Names department and press them to provide this information spatially for free. I was in contact with them last year on a project and I can report they would like to go that way and were very helpful.

Obtain them directly now from Geobase, though you'll have to register to access them. (See this article)
You can download them through the ftp site.

Great resource, the Geobase.

Take note of the actual locations of some of the populated places, or even well known landmarks. They may be in the 'wrong' spot so local knowledge when using that dataset will definitely benefit you. I am constantly 'fixing' locations when I use that point dataset in Northern BC, but then again, it seems like data integrity/qq-qa diminishes the farther North you are of the 49th parallel. Lucky if you are in Toronto or Vancouver, they got excellent datasets together!
