my name is Marvin C. Offiah. I am 25, and a student of Geoinformatics
and about to acquire the German Diploma - an equivalent of the
Master's Degree - by the beginning of April at the University of
Münster, Germany:

My thesis focuses on open source illustrated mapping solutions for
custom cartography. I can imagine working in the area of custom and
illustrated cartography long term - with cartographic editors that
attach higher aesthetic value to map products (e.g.
I might consider extending my work, moving on with my doctorate. But
at the same time, I also want to get some real-life experience in the
field and go through the process of producing illustrated and custom
maps of all kinds in practice. For that purpose, I am looking for
appropriate editors, firms, institutions etc.

At the same time, I am also interested in North America, especially in
Canada, and more particularly, in Toronto as Canada's most interesting
city to me. Hence I would like to make some working experience there
and get in touch with the cultural and living environment etc.
Other cities in North America that I would consider - at least for the
period of a short-term internship - are Calgary, Chicago and Dallas.

So to combine both, I am looking for internships at such cartographic
companies, preferably in Toronto and its closer environment, or
otherwise, in any of the other places I mentioned. I would be very
grateful if you could help me with this. Are there any companies for
my field of interest here?

Thanks in advance,
Marvin C. Offiah

Hello Marvin!

I don't think what you are looking for in an internship sounds like a good fit for our company (we're working from a series of 12 home-based design studios, versus your likely wanting to work in a traditional office/company setting), but if you ever want to chat a bit about your interests, your ideas, etc. related to your doctorate or gaining experience in the field, feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to chat.

Illustrated/custom cartography work is my passion...and while I'm pretty good as a vector designer, I'm much better at the marketing/operational side of running a mapping shop (surrounding myself with talented designers who in many ways can put the quality of my own design work to shame). That, and I get to spend a great deal of time trying to innovate, taking existing designs and doing what needs to be done for better legibility, better support for color-blindness issues, faster-performance in electronic apps, etc.

So if you ever want to talk, I'd be happy to speak with you. Best of luck with your continued studies and pursuits!
