Google Maps slow?

Is it me or do the Google Maps servers seem slow these days? In the last few weeks I have noticed that I've been waiting more than I usually do for Google Maps to finish drawing, particularly when I'm looking at the satellite/air photos. Is anyone else experiencing this?

It drives me crazy. Not just as a mashup developer, but also because I've been trying to tell Google for over two years now how they could make their entire service run about 28-32 percent faster. Their millions of tiles have not been fully optimized for electronic applications...and multiplied across millions of daily users, what you get is a ...service.....that..........starts...........winding.............down..........
.........................clo.......ck. [insert blue screen of death here]
For how innovative Google is and how conscious they are of not wasting resources and being environmentally friendly, they sure get a poor grade for image optimization. Something an 8th grader with an afternoon of training and 2-3 free OpenSource programs could perform on their behalf.

Yeah, it just frustrates me. If someone comes to me, tells me a free and easy way I could make our company's services better serve end-users (and save our company money), and isn't even asking for a "thank you" in return, trust me...you've got my undivided attention. Yet Google, who is having 100,000 times the direct impact on people's lives that a company like ours is, doesn't seem to think it's important enough to even return phone calls or emails. And the tools that millions are using to make their lives easier/better are getting ever-slower to use.
I don't get it. If I was contacting them saying "pay me $_________ and I'll tell you the secret for how to improve your products" I could understand being blown off. But I've basically given them the blueprint for how to dramatically improve their tool performance, for the steep price of free, and they won't listen. ARGH.

I would like to ask if anyone (Derek?) has done any size / speed analysis of the vector based maps that Google is serving to Android phones now. I haven't seen it personally, but by it's very nature, I would assume a huge savings in file size once Google flips the switch on that resource for the web version.

I personally haven't seen (or conducted) any type of analysis on the maps that Google is using in Android now...but I'd certainly be game to try it. If I thought anyone at Google cared, anyway.
Or I suppose even if they didn't care. Bang the drum loudly for long enough, and maybe they'll finally start paying attention to the issue, right?! Although it hasn't worked with Adobe yet either...as I've also tried to show them how their software is several MBs too heavy/large, and the unoptimized images used in their GUI and help/tutorials are unnecessarily consuming more RAM than they need to. But I think Google will see the light before Adobe does.

That's a problem, because typically people doing these property deals (industrial buildings, shopping centres, etc.) send out Google locator maps to their prospects long before they get around to hiring professionals to do the final mapping. Wanna buy a multi-million dollar building? Here it is on Google....oops
