A subcontractor sent me some Russian labels in Word, and I need to get them into Freehand MX. They show up fine in Word, but I can't figure out how to get them into FreeHand. This is all in Mac OS X. Any suggestions?

im not on mac, and not a freehand user, but make sure you are using unicode fonts (that include cyrillic characters) and makre sure that the fonts in the word document are unicode (or try the same font in both places). then cut and paste... ?

You may need to get the text into FH as an object. FH is not unicode enabled. I would suggest getting the text into illustrator, converting it to paths and pasting into FH.

Thanks, but I've had no luck with Illustrator, either.

If anyone wants to try bringing this Word file into Illustrator or FreeHand just to convert it to paths, I'd be most grateful. At this point I don't care what typeface as long as it's Cyrillic characters.

I sent you an email.

But for anyone else interested I was able to place the word doc. dirtectly in an empty CS2 document since it is unicode compatible. It seems to use a Times New roman font for everything including the Cyrillic characters.

Many thanks to Alpine Mapping Guild, who sent me a file with the Cyrillic converted to paths. The helpfulness of my fellow cartographers around the world always astonishes me.

Alpine Mapping Guild

I am having a similar problem with Russian Characters. I am a student who is converting english to russian characters for one of my international friends at school. What programs etc. do I need to have these Russian Characters show up? What are the steps I need to do? I have been trying to do this in freehand and quark with no success. Please help!

You need access to Illustrator CS or CS2 or Indesign or a program that is unicode compatible and probably a Cyrillic font or a font with cyrillic character set. Not sure about Quark I dont use it. But FHMX will only allow you to do this with the Russian or Turkish version of the software (I think). So you need to prepare your text in Ilustrator then convert it to objects and cut and paste those objects into a FH document. Understand that they will no longer be editable as text once this has been done.
