I've used this method myself (but with different colour ramps and using different parameters for 'gdaldem hillshade') and am pleased with the results.

Great link, this is the kind of step-by-step instruction I would need to begin to understand the scripting of GDAL. Subscribed.

The hillshade came out nice and the flattening of the color ramp with the hillshade I found neat! I hate having to always have multiple raster layers in ArcMap because on export, they explode the size of the export and require heavy JPEG compression.

But there is now the Image Analysis toolbar that can help alleviate some of these rendering issues (with some bugs that still need working on).

I just wish I knew more python to really be able to incorporate it into a GIS (which is where I've noticed QGIS really come alive).

I just recently d-loaded and installed the latest QGIS release and the add-ins seem far more comprehensive than before, especially for raster analysis, very impressed with some of the functions in here that one may be paying an arm and a leg for to do with proprietary software(s).
