Under the heading of:

‘Download, study, bring with you and utilise’

the region of Stavanger in Norway is attempting to entice travellers into obtaining a wealth of A-Z navigating information before they arrive at the actual destination.

Their three step plan of development is as follows:

- to produce high quality comprehensive PDF maps
- easy access to the material
- solidarity, by encouraging all concerned in regional business, local government and non-government organisations to make available and highlight the web based portal.

As the project is finally nearing completion it is with pleasure for us that the CartoTalk community is first in line to have a peek at the index page before release of the full service due in Spring of 2011.



As usual, all comments, both positive and negative are made very welcome.

Lets hope that 2011 will be a productive and memorable year for all cartographers around the globe - In other words “go for it!”

These look really great. I like how you've included lots of great information in the form of web links, et cetera. Well done. If I remember correctly you've been offering PDF maps for some time now. What kind of response have you gotten from customers? Have you seen an increase in demand to view these on mobile devices? Thanks for sharing.

Hello Erin and thank you very much for your positive feedback.

Yes you are correct in your assumption, iPad use has dramatically increased over the last few months.

The ‘To & From Stavanger’ map, with all the various transport links for online ticketing etc., is at present one of the most popular maps for the larger mobile devices.



I’m not sure how things will develop, but I think that a compelling visual background like a map (as above), with direct links to various services, is certainly a useful tool. Practically all you need on one page, with an informative pleasant overall view of the geographical area.

I use the ‘To & From Stavanger' map myself, when booking flights abroad, so I can understand and appreciate others wanting to do likewise.

Hello Davis, California and thank you very much for your positive feedback.

I do all the work and own copy rights etc., then the Municipality pay me a regular salary every month on a five year contract.

There are other royalties but the above is the basic stable setup.

Hello Jeff and thank you very much for your positive feedback.

It’s an open source project run through the Municipality.
The way they look at it is:
…the marketing, commercial and informative aspects of promoting the region outweigh any need for a closed system.

I hope 2011 will be a great mapping year for Canada.

It’s all relevant to the above topic; City branding etc., and it’s really wonderful when the politicians and bureaucrats drop the politics and open their minds to the arts & crafts…
…wonderful for cartographers to boot, as a city changes and develops!
