I have no background in graphics programming, although I have good math knowledge and otherwise decent basic programming skills. I'm looking for graphics software or a good programming language that will assist me in computing and demonstrating biological aspects of fractal geometry. Also, any suggestions on good literature related to this subject would be greatly appreciated.
What software is good for graphics programming?

Processing, a FOSS framework for graphics programming, comes to mind : http://processing.org/
It is a java library, but a javascript sister project is now disponible. Well documented, many examples and entire books are available.
Besides, there is always the mastodont of the field : Matlab. (And it FOSS lookalike : Octave). R has also many graphical possibilities.

If you only need to work in the windows environment, F#.NET is supposed to be a nice functional language for mathematical processing (the kind of stuff I know nothing about). I believe you can tap into their Windows Presentation Framework from F# which would give all the graphical capabilities you could need. You could also check out FLEX/AIR/Actionscript, and the degrafa library for powerful graphic drawing functionality. There is also javascript as an alternative. I just did a quick search and found these examples for each:
F#

Javascript

Actionscript

Here is one for Processing too

So in other words, take your pick.
Hope that helps,
David
