Overview of Cartographic Perspectives
In 2011, Cartographic Perspectives (CP) will become a primarily digital, open access journal. To fulfill the requirements of a web-based, open access journal (manuscript management, web posting of pre-print content, discussion threads, DOI assignment, etc.), NACIS will be employing the Public Knowledge Project's open journal system.

CP Request for New Website Proposals
The North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) wishes to contract the services of an individual/firm to redesign and implement a new website for Cartographic Perspectives (CP), the journal of NACIS. Requisite skills include expertise in graphic design and web development using HTML/CSS and PHP. Background knowledge in Cartography is a plus, as it can be leveraged to inform the website design, but is not required. Some experience with database management is required to initially configure the system. The design and development of the CP website is a one-time job and will not require continued maintenance by the contractor.

CP Work Requirements
Responsibilities of the contractor are two-fold. First, the contractor will configure the PKP open journal system to meet the requirements of CP and deploy it to a PHP-enabled server hosted by NACIS. The contractor will not be asked to generate any seed content, although will be required to collaborate with CP's Editor and Assistant Editor in order to populate the system with an initial set of information/documents provided by NACIS. Second, the contractor will skin the website to match the look and feel of NACIS and Cartographic Perspectives; the contractor will be provided a set of NACIS branded documents from which to draw, but will be given creative freedom to come up with an attractive and usable design. An initial design will be submitted to the CP website committee for review; once approved, the contractor will work primarily with the CP Editor and Assistant Editor to ensure all requirements are met. For examples demonstrating the design flexibility provided by the PKP open journal system, see the following journal index.

CP Schedule / Logistics
It is the goal of NACIS Board and the CP Editorial Board to have the website functional by release of the first open access issue (late-February, 2011). Please submit electronically project quotes, examples of relevant past work, and any inquires about the work requirements to Patrick Kennelly, Incoming Editor of Cartographic Perspectives, by January 10, 2011.
