Hello, I'm new to maps and cartography and have been studying with some curiosity what seems to be a navigation aid in some old maps. Who subs for latitude and longitude appears to be numerous compass roses or maybe even wind rose lines. See an example here (from, admittedly, a fictitious map). What is this used for and how does it work? Thanks!

There was an earlier post on that - see this link.
And welcome to the forum!
Thank you so much! I searched the forum but not knowing what I was looking for, didn't come across that topic. Much appreciated!
