Nicely executed. I like the use of color and weight. I tossed around the idea of doing something like this using letterpress type a few years ago, but it came to naught. Good to see someone pull it through to completion.

The resulting artwork is really nice and it's apparent that it was a labor of love. But to put in all that effort and NOT letterpress them seems like a total waste. There's a large market for museum quality prints (see Colosseo from Cameron Moll), and this is easily something that could go from "really nice" to "exquisitely gorgeous" by putting the same craft into its final print that went into the layout.

The challenge, which I quickly got to and I suspect Axis did too, is what to do about the damned intersections? Axis' quicker solution of masking streets in white strips and cutting off lower lines of type would need to be reconsidered. I'm not sure it's possible to pull it off with non-overlapping, non-cut-off type, without making the end result illegible. The whole short-street-with-a-long-name problem REALLY gets to be a problem here...

One thing that really surprised me was that they didn't straighten up Chicago (1.3 degrees) to "Chicago North." Surely no one plans to use this map for orienteering.
