A new book has just been released: " Islands in the Salish Sea: A Community Atlas"
The Salish Sea refers to the sea between Vancouver Island and the Mainland in British Columbia. The First Nations people from the region are the Salish.

From the publisher's website:

At Last! The love and painstaking work of over 3,000 islanders, from Saturna to Cortes, can now be appreciated by a wider audience.

During a five year period, The Islands in the Salish Sea Community Mapping Project engaged the help of enthusiastic local groups to gather information on everything from oral history with elders to scientific data. More than 30 local artists then brought these layers of accumulated information to life in vividly unique and extraordinary maps. The result is a powerful array of mixed media art forms reflecting not only the islands’ outstanding beauty, but also human elements of culture and diversity in a rapidly developing and fragile region.

This extraordinary collection portrays these popular islands, linking art, science, and local knowledge into an innovative, millennial atlas, including how each map came to be. Additional chapters describe the origins and strengths of the discipline of artistic community mapping, the unfolding of the mapping project from first spark to proud finale, and also the history and character of the islands.

You can order it here:

Islands in the Salish Sea

through Heritage House Publishers. Also available through Amazon of course, although you are always supporting the project more by ordering through the publisher...............

Broken Link?

Afar from that it sounds great. Were ther cartographers involved? Or "just" artists and designers?

The Heritige House website must be down. Here is another link:

This is all community cartography. All the data is compiled and mapped by the people and artists who live on the islands. They would not have had to re-map the basic topography as they would have had a base map done by a cartographer at some point. What is so fascinating is the gathering of data from oral tradition. So much information about these landscapes was only ever recorded in memory and passed down from generation to generation to each successive 'keeper' of the traditional landscape knowledge. It would be a huge undertaking to gather this information, and a lot of this information would have never been published before.

I had the privilege of meeting with some of the elders of the Cowichan First Nation this past summer. The imagery of what life used to be like in these regions, and how they used to gather their medicine form the hills as they needed it.......... amazing......
